Diaphragmatic Breathing
Also known as belly breathing or abdominal breathing, diaphragmatic breathing helps you strengthen your diaphragm and rejuvenate lung function. The diaphragm is a large, dome-shaped muscle located at the base of the lungs. It separates the thorax from the abdomen and plays a fundamental role in breathing. How To Perform Diaphragmatic (Belly) Breathing
The Basic Technique:
- Sit down or lie on a comfortable flat surface and use pillows as needed to keep the body in a comfortable position.
- Relax your shoulders, neck, and head, and place one hand on the abdomen and the other on the chest.
- Follow the colors of the Breathing Ball.
- GREEN: Inhale slowly through your nose and draw the air down toward the belly until you cannot take anymore. Wait for the ball to change to white.
- WHITE: Slowly exhale until the ball changes colors again.
- Repeat this cycle for at least two minutes.

4-7-8 Breathing
The 4-7-8 breathing is another type of deep breathing exercise that may help you relax and fall asleep quickly. The technique was developed by the Harvard-trained medical doctor and the founder of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine, Dr. Andrew Weil, who refers to it as a “natural tranquilizer for the nervous system.” It is based on Pranayama — an ancient yogic technique to relax and gain control over breathing.
How To Perform 4-7-8 Breathing
Basic Technique:
- Sit down or lie on a comfortable flat surface and use pillows as needed to keep the body in a comfortable position.
- Relax your shoulders, neck, and head, and place one hand on the abdomen and the other on the chest.
- Follow the colors of the Breathing Ball.
- BLUE: Inhale through your nose while slowly counting to four.
- PURPLE: Hold your breath for a count of seven.
- GREEN: Exhale through your mouth, making a whooshing sound and counting to eight in your head.
- Repeat this cycle four times.
